Effect of the “Coronavirus” emergency on the zootechnical Italian systems

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is still the topic of several analysis carried out by the institutions who take care of the possible future scenarios on the economic side.

A possible situation we expect is a PIL reduction for many countries for, at least, the next 2 years.

In this background, it is important to rely on technical-scientific opinions that allow identifying the more efficient instruments to help farmers maximize the effects of the economics efforts, in order to bring this area back to normal. For this reason, the Georgofili academy and the ASPA have worked on a document “The effect of the Coronavirus emergency on the zootechnical Italian systems,” as a support for ministries and regions to promote the innovations transfers.

The mobility block of citizens due to the lockdown has reset the use of the products of animal origin in the Ho.Re.Ca areas (Hotel, Restaurant, Catering) in the traditional markets and in the local ones.
On the contrary, the families’ consumption has remained the same, with only a few changes in the basket: for example, the use of milk and fresh cheese has decreased (-30%) in favor of the UHT milk and the ripe cheese.

The effect of the lockdown and consequently the effect of staying at home forcibly, have caused an increase in the consumption of the products of animal origin for home use like milk (in particular UHT milk as you couldn’t go to groceries frequently), butter (for home desserts), eggs, meat served cold, cheese (different types according to the areas where they are produced), hamburger, minced meat, chicken..
The Italian context characterizes also many other countries in the world. Actually, the global emergency has modified the work of the farmers and the routine in the parlor. The block of the movements has reduced the contacts between farmers and between the other people involved in the sector. Networking models like farms shows, meetings, etc have been postponed.

The situation created by the pandemic SARS-CoV-2 in the zootechnical area may be an incentive for a research of new models of collaboration and cooperation between farmers, to face all the emergencies, not only the health ones.

In the medium term, this situation will require more uses of new technologies (ICT, Precision livestock, video calls) that can increase the company’s income.

All the companies who work in the dairy field should adopt systems for the traceability and the quality with certification process, in order to manage the food and safety production.
The Ministry of Health has promoted the application of the system Classy Farm on the biosafety, the animal wellbeing and the food safety.

So, it is necessary to increase the awareness of the importance of the innovation in the dairies, and this is a cornerstone of the Puli-sistem business philosophy.
